Halloween: A Scary Season Rooted in Reality

Friday, October 31st, 2008

BY MELISSA NEWMAN

EVERY YEAR, AMID the excitement of Halloween-related fun, conversations commonly turn toward scary and unnerving talk of the mysterious world of paranormal and supernatural phenomena. Unlike the entertaining “safe scares” that Halloween brings, for those who encounter “real paranormal phenomena,” the encounters can be truly terrifying and even life-changing. And while these otherworldly phenomena have been a part of the human experience since the dawn of humankind – and, incidentally, is where Halloween originates – not even western society’s modern-day cynical culture of scientific analysis could dismiss and suppress the existence of these elusive phenomena. On the contrary, whether you are a believer or a hardened skeptic, an avalanche of experiences involving paranormal and supernatural phenomena continues to be reported worldwide.

According to several polls and surveys conducted around the world, belief in the paranormal and supernatural is at an all time high and shows no evidence of decline. In the U.S. alone, a recent Gallop poll showed that 75% of Americans have some sort of paranormal belief; a Harris poll showed that half of Americans believe in ghosts; a CBS poll showed that one in five Americans have seen or physically encountered a ghost; and still another survey taken from more than 400 college students with the highest GPAs found seniors and grad students more likely to believe in the paranormal then their “uneducated” freshman counterparts. Paranormal beliefs include such phenomena as extraterrestrial and UFO close encounters, all types of psychic phenomena, miracles and demonic possession, ghosts and poltergeists, witchcraft and metaphysics, and encounters with extraordinary life forms, including Bigfoot and the notorious chupacabra.

HALLOWEEN ORIGINS

Whether one is a believer or a skeptic, Halloween in the U.S. might be the one time of the year that both stand united in simply having a good time in the shadow of such reported phenomena. The origins of Halloween itself lay in supernatural beliefs and an ancient Celtic festival that dates back some 2,000 years. Originally called Samhain (pronounced sow-in), the festival originated amidst the region now known as the United Kingdom and celebrated the one night each year that the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became indistinguishable. On this night, the Celts believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to Earth for good or for bad and allowed Druid priests to additionally interact with them for the wellbeing of them all.

Over the course of hundreds of years, early Christianity would attempt to suppress and replace the Celtic festival with All Saints’ Day, which was celebrated on November 1, a holy day of obligation to honor saints and martyrs in the Christian faith. The celebration was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (from Middle English Alholowmesse meaning All Saints’ Day) and the night before it, the night of Samhain, began to be called All-hallows Eve and, eventually, Halloween. But even the powerful influence of the church was unable to squelch the supernatural festival, and Halloween endured and flourished over the centuries to become the sensationalistic celebration it is today in the U.S.

While Halloween is still mostly an American commercial phenomenon, little by little every year, evidence that the spooky holiday is being embraced globally is being seen more and more. UNICEF itself has a special “Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF” program aimed to empower kids, not just in the U.S., but in other countries as well, by trick-or-treating for donations to help their counter-parts in need all over the world. The reluctance to embrace Halloween in other countries has been primarily due to the seriousness that the supernatural and paranormal is taken in other cultures. While the western world can make light of beliefs, both religious and metaphysical, other old-world cultures are very sensitive to and deeply immersed in their beliefs and find such playfulness like the Amercanized version of Halloween to be considered as taboo and, in some cultures, even sacrilegious.

Enjoy your Halloween!

Free Personal Radio from Slacker.com

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Most hard working people have a negative opinion of anyone they would consider a slacker. After a few days of playing with the free personal radio service from Slacker.com I finally think I understand the name. I’ll explain my thoughts on that by the end of this article. Note: If you have trouble getting the Web player to finish loading you can click the link in the top frame to “turn off the top frame.”

Slacker.com offers CD quality sound for free, while most free personal radio services either don’t offer CD quality sound, or you need a paid subscription to get it. Since the service is only available with CD quality sound, you will need a broadband connection to use it.
Lots of Stations:
Slacker.com is approaching nearly 100 professionally programmed genre stations covering all kinds of music and over 10,000 artist stations. You can personalize any of the stations so the music matches your tastes exactly.
Coming Soon:
There are two features that are not available yet (at this writing), but are coming later this year that will make Slacker.com totally unique and very desirable for many music fans. One is a portable device that will allow you to take Slacker.com personal radio anywhere you go. The other is WiFi and satellite service that will allow the personal radio to always have fresh music on the personal player wherever you go.
Portable Device:
Obviously, and unfortunately, the Slacker.com portable music player will not be free. However, it will offer a lot for the projected price tag. It will be “refillable” by WiFi and it will have a 4 inch full color screen to display album art, artist, and track information. The personal players will start at $149.
Free satellite Service:
This part blew me away when I heard the satellite service would be free. It’s not satellite radio, and it’s not streaming, but it will allow you to get fresh music on the personal device when you are in your car. The free satellite service will require you to purchase a car kit.

Ethics and the World of Freebies

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

from Lee Seats, about.com: Ethics and Freebies?
You are probably wondering how ethics and freebies are connected. In my rather simplistic view of ethics, the subject boils down to a code of how you deal with other people. When you order freebies and when I provide links to free offers we are both using the Internet to deal with real people at the other end of the wire. The nature of the Internet makes it easy to forget that everything on the Net is there as a result of someone’s efforts.

Freebie Hunters’ Code
Please remember that when a company offers something for free they are doing it for business reasons. They are hoping that the lure of something for free will not only bring visitors to their site, but that those visitors will be potential customers. Companies usually only have a limited number of free items that they can provide. Based on those points, here is my suggested ethical code for the freebie seeker:

Order Responsibly - Only order freebies that you can use or that interest you. Don’t just send for something because it is free.

Honor Restrictions - If there is a restriction on who can order, only order it if you qualify. Some examples are businesses only, over 18 only, etc.

Don’t be Greedy - Most free offers are one per household or one per person. This one is important not only to respect the company’s wishes, but to leave some goodies for other freebie hunters.

Be Polite - If you have an opportunity, say “thank you” in a comment field or email message. Don’t yell at company representatives because they ran out of a freebie because you didn’t qualify.
General Internet Ethics
While I am still on my soap box I’ll harp about a general “Internet ethics” issue that came to my attention quite bluntly. I found a small portion of my work copied by two other Web publishers. I contacted both of them and worked things out, but we all need to be more careful about how we use what we find on the Net. The nature of the Internet makes it easy for this type of thing to happen, but as responsible Internet citizens we need to do a little thinking about how our actions impact others. It is easier to be respectful when you just remember that there are real people at the other end of the wire.

Free one world, one flag sticker

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

The mission is simple and modest- spread the word, seed the idea. We are not looking to actively set policy or establish programs, rather, we hope that by heightening the awareness to seeing ourselves not only as independent nations but also as one world. Using, the One World, One Flag image as a lightning rod to attract more energy into this vision.

Through distribution of the one world, one flag image we hope to introduce and promote the concept of a more borderless earth that in turn might encourage more interaction, more understanding and respect for diversity and, eventually, fewer conflicts between people currently divided by man-made borders and religions.

The Seed

Welcome to One World, One Flag (oneworldoneflag.org), a community looking to offer a single flag that might serve as a universal focal point, a common veil, for all.

Naïve? Probably. But it strikes as odd that as the world shrinks yet splinters into more divergent and conflictive subsets, as it becomes impossible to ignore the ramifications of our interconnection and reliance on each other, there is no common symbol to represent the whole of us.

Which begs the chicken and egg question- which must come first, our unity, or a symbol to encourage and mark that unity? 1W1F would argue that it’s difficult to rally around a vision that has no form. To expect people to arrive at a meeting point that has never been placed on the map.

So let there be a world flag. A flag ignorant to boundaries and political or religious beliefs, a flag that recognizes and celebrates the power of both the individual and the whole- a flag that speaks for the hope and possibility of this.

The Flag

Description

The One World, One Flag banner has been designed to both represent the earth and convey a simple message through symbolic means. In the center, the earth is shown as a sphere with 7 colored diamonds representing continental landmasses separated by seas and oceans. Symbolically, each continent is linked to a neighbor left and right but disconnected from others. Each is a different color, acknowledging not only the unique physical attributes of the respective lands but also the differences of the people who inhabit them.

White light is the product of all colors of light. In this vein, the white seven-pointed star that rests in the center of the sphere is the product of each continent giving of its color to the greater whole and is symbolic of the pure and enormous potential that might be recognized from a more borderless world, aligned. From 6.2 billion people acknowledging each other.

The uniqueness and appropriateness of the number seven- and it’s presence on earth in the form of 7 continents and 7 seas forming, on the flag, the seven-pointed star of potential- is not lost: Seven a prime number divisible only by one and itself.

Finally, the white background on which the earth is placed is intended to convey both the hope for the future and the starkness of a world or time without life, without color.

In summary, the One World, One Flag design is a celebration of all that is different on this earth, and a call to recognize the beauty and potential of this.

Free Audio from the Internet Audio Archive

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

The mission of the Internet Archive is to build an Internet library to preserve content for future generations and for historical research. They have expanded well beyond just storing Web pages. They are rapidly building an extensive archive of digital media which now includes over 70,000 audio files.

The quantity and variety of free audio content is incredible. Here are some examples of of audio collections you may find of interest:

Berkeley Groks Science Radio
If you have even a spark of scientific curiosity, this would be great listening for the daily commute.

78 RPM Records
Early twentieth century culture and technology meets the early twenty first century. These recordings are fascinating and surprisingly enjoyable. No need to check your speaker cables, remember stereo was not invented until the 1930’s and not commercialized until the late 1950’s.

Live Music Archive
This is a huge collection of live concerts and other live audio. Some selections are available as MP3 files, but many recordings are only available as lossless audio files. They have information on what you need to listen to the lossless files.

Open Source Audio
These are various types of audio files that have been contributed by the creators. Many use a Creative Commons license which often allows others to use them in their own creations.
The above is only a sampling of what is available in the Internet Audio Archive.

Thank you for requesting your Holosync Demo and Special Report, and for your help in filling out our short survey. I’m very excited to have you actually experience Holosync for yourself.

To get a head start, and to get the maximum benefit from the Holosync demo we’re sending, please read the following information about how Holosync works and how it will benefit you (some of this is the same material you saw on the home page, but please don’t assume you’ve seen it all):

The lazy man’s way to meditate
Listening to this amazing, scientifically proven brain technology gives you all the benefits of meditation—in a fraction of the time—easily and effortlessly

Try it yourself, FREE!
Did you know that people who meditate everyday are many times happier than those who don’t?

They’re also healthier, and live longer. And, their sense of well-being is much higher than that of non-meditators. In fact, meditators are so much healthier that some insurance companies charge lower premiums for meditators than for the rest of the general population.

Meditators’ minds are also sharper, and their problem-solving abilities are better.
That’s one reason why many high-powered executives, and even CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, meditate.

Did you also know that meditators make a LOT more pleasurable brain chemicals—the ones you feel on those days when you feel REALLY good—and, they make these feel-good brain chemicals pretty much ALL THE TIME?

Did you know that meditators have dramatically better mental health? They have less anxiety, anger, depression, and fear, and they have better human relationships, more friends, and feel much more fulfilled in their lives?

So with all these benefits, why isn’t everyone meditating?
You know why. To get these results, you have to meditate four or five hours a day, often for decades, and few people are willing to do this. And, meditation, especially at first, isn’t much fun. The initial experience is somewhere between boring and frustrating. Finally, it takes quite a long time to notice any significant results, much less to experience the benefits I just mentioned.

But what if I told you that you could meditate as deeply as a Zen monk, literally at the touch of a button, and do it the very first time, and every time and also make all those happy brain chemicals the first time and every time?

Not only that, within a very short period of time—days or weeks instead of years or decades—you could begin receiving all the benefits I just mentioned—the physical health benefits, the mental health benefits, the clarity-of-mind benefits, the relationship benefits, and the overall sense of well-being benefits.
