GRASS PLANTING TIPS

It is September and the hot days are winding down and ready to give way to cool fall temperatures. However, this is still a wonderful time to plant grass and cut down on unnecessary erosion. These quick tips should help your property look beautiful come spring.

Always cover your bare ground with vegetation as soon as possible to prevent erosion of soil. This also helps cut down on possible damage to your property.
Rake the area before sowing seed.
Spread grass seed by hand or with a spreader*.
*If you use a spreader, only use half (1/2) of seed in one direction. Once finished, then spread the other half of the seed at 90 degrees from your original direction. Example, if you are spreading the first half moving North and South, then spread the other half moving East and West. This will allow for better coverage of your area.
Rake the soil lightly to cover seeds.
Lightly cover the area with straw to prevent the soil from drying out and seeds/soil from washing away. Don’t cover the entire area with straw. Allow soil to show through. Covering with too much straw will prevent the grass from sprouting.
Water thoroughly to keep soil damp while seed is germinating. Recommended amount of water is one inch (1”) per week. Make sure that the water penetrates down below the surface. Just dampening the surface is not enough water.

Due to West Virginia’s steep hills and the variety of soil types, contact your local Conservation District, West Virginia University Extension Agent, nursery, hardware store or garden center for information on the need for fertilizer, grass for shade versus sunny areas, stabilizing steep hillsides, etc. Also, you may be able to contact your West Virginia Soil Conservation county agent for a soil test to see what type of grass seed is best suited for your property.

Storm Water Tips
Here are ten simple things every homeowner can do to help reduce the amount of pollutants that are carried into West Virginia’s streams, lakes and rivers.

1. Never dump anything down a storm drain or drainage ditch. The storm drain system conveys storm water directly to a creek or stream, without any treatment.

2. Properly dispose of all trash, rubbish an garbage. Trash that is left in your yard, or on the street will eventually end up in the closest creek or stream.

3. Place your cigarette butts in the proper receptacle. Don’t throw them on the ground.

4. Recycle used motor oil. Find out if your local community or gas station will accept used motor oil and take it there. Whatever you do, never dump motor oil, gasoline, or solvents down a storm drain!

5. Wash your car in the grass, or take to a commercial car wash. Your car has oils and greases that wash off and then flow into the storm drains, polluting the nearby water body. Commercial car washes have special procedures for treating the water that washes off your car.

6. Clean up after your pet. Place pet waste in a trash receptacle or flush down the toilet. Pet waste contains harmful bacteria that will wash into our streams and rivers when it rains.

7. Use fertilizers and pesticides only when needed. Fertilizers promote algae growth in our waterways. When using fertilizers, follow application instructions and do not apply if rain is forecasted.

8. Compost yard & grass clippings. Don’t allow your grass clippings to blow into the street, or curb.

9. Check your vehicles for leaks and repair them!
